Google Statistics (2026)

Google is one of the most recognisable brands in the world, responsible for a suite of the most widely used applications in the world, including its eponymous search engine, Chrome, Gmail, Google Maps and YouTube.

The search engine was officially launched in 1998 by Larry Page and Sergey Brin, two PhD students at Stanford University who had been working on the project for two years.

Page and Brin met in 1995 and both worked on the Stanford the Stanford Digital Library Project, which aimed to create a single universal digital library. Page had also researched the importance of backlinks in his PhD thesis, and had created with Brin an algorithm to measure website importance and relevance, which would become PageRank.

The PageRank algorithm set Google apart from other search engines at the time, such as Yahoo, AltaVista and Excite.com, but in the first few years the company did not gain any meaningful market share. It even considered in 1999 selling Google to Excite.com for $1 million, which was rejected by Excite CEO George Bell.

The early 2000s saw Google’s market share increase, and during the dotcom bubble it was considered one of the best picks for technologies of the future. Yahoo offered Google $3 billion in 2002 to acquire the company, but by that point both Page and Brin had decided to remain independent and were starting to plan for an IPO, which would happen in 2004.

In 2006, Google made its first major acquisition of one year old video-sharing platform YouTube for $1.65 billion, considered an insane amount at the time due to YouTube’s audience size and the other competitors on the market. A year later, it acquired DoubleClick for $3.1 billion, which could be considered the most important acquisition Google has ever done, given it led to the search engine’s dominance in the digital advertising market.

By the late 2000s, Google had established itself as the lead search engine. The competition between Microsoft and Google on the web led to Google launching Chrome in 2008, which over the next five years ate at Microsoft’s Internet Explorer market share. Google also launched a social network, Google+, in 2010 to compete with Facebook. Even though it had some support amongst the photography community, it ultimately failed to catch on and was closed in 2019.

In 2015, Google reorganized as Alphabet, a holding company to better serve the interests of its many subsidiaries. Sundar Pichai became head of Google, while Page became head of Alphabet. In 2019, Pichai would take over as CEO of Alphabet, effectively taking over control of all operations.

Google has faced many threats over its two decades, but ChatGPT was the first where Google was uniquely on the defensive. ChatGPT has taken a considerable portion of Google’s search volume over the past two years, and has forced Google to pivot heavily into AI, launching products that it otherwise would’ve kept private, or in limited beta.

While it looks likely that search will continue on Google for a while, the new era of chatbots has led to many searches that would have started on Google instead happen on ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, or any of the other generative AI chatbot services.

We have collected data and statistics on Google. Read on below to find out more.
