Hinge is one of a new wave of apps that have marketed themselves as the anti-Tinder, with a focus on relationships over casual hookup culture. Its tagline, “the dating app designed to be deleted”, reinforces that focus on Hinge being go-between for singles to find partners.
When setting up a profile, Hinge lets users answers question cards that can be added to the profile. It recently added the ability to answer those questions with voice notes, which has become one of Hinge’s most popular features and a reason for its recent boost in usage.
Launched in 2012, the same year as Tinder, Hinge originally plugged into Facebook and let users list which friends they had crushes on. As the team built-out the app, the Facebook-plugin disappeared and it was refocused on long-term dating.
It wasn’t long before Match Group, the parent company of Tinder, Match.com, Plenty of Fish and a host of other dating apps, came knocking. In made its first investment in 2017, then upped it to 50 percent ownership of the company in 2018. In 2019, Match Group acquired the rest of the company.
Under Match’s stewardship, Hinge has grown from $8 million revenue in 2018 to $550 million in 2024. In the United States, it is now third place in online dating marketshare, behind Tinder and Bumble and is first in several European countries including the UK, Ireland, Sweden, Norway, and Denmark.
